What is a CV and how could a professionally written one change my life?

C.V is short for the Latin phrase curriculum vitae, or in English, the course of my life.

Over the course of our lives, we’ve all acquired skills and qualifications that make us employable.  Whether we have a university degree, we’re good with our hands, or simply just social, if we have the right attitude we can add value to an employer.

As we all know however, it isn’t always that simple.  We need a competitive edge to get our foot in the door and persuade employers to give us a chance.

At Descript we believe we can give you that necessary competitive edge over other applicants.  We use both our business and writing skills to consider the employers perspective and present your skills in a way that gets interviews.

Whatever a job means to you; whether it’s something to pay the bills, an exciting new career or a way to fund your dream trip to the moon, Descript can help.  Your future begins now.

The CV was simple and easy to read.  Most of the companies replied back wanting to interview me and it took only two weeks to get a full time job.

Even since I’ve been working, everyone keeps calling me.

What sort of CV is best for me?

Chronological

A chronological resume is the most common format, and presents the applicants history and qualifications in order with newest first.  This is best for people with some experience, particularly if it shows progression and loyalty.

We recommend this for most clients with some experience.

Skills-based

A skills-based CV focuses more on your skills and abilities than presenting a history.  We recommend this for people with a wide variety of unrelated experience, new graduates or people with gaps in their employment history.

This is very effective when done right.

How does it work?

  1. Complete our CV builder form (requires 15mins – 1 hour)
  2. Information is received by a Descript Editor and forwarded to a writer
  3. Using an aesthetic template, the writer works their magic and crafts your CV into a work of art
  4. The CV is returned to an Editor for approval before completion.

The CV builder form should only take 15 mins – 1 hour to complete, depending on your preparation.  The rest of the process should be completed within 5 working days.

What your money gets you:

A professionally written CV presented in an aesthetic format.  A second pair of eyes, not only checking grammar but the ‘approach’ also.

Tips for a successful job-hunt

  • Make sure you have a personal email address appropriate to a professional setting.  It is worth taking 5 minutes to set up a new one if necessary.
  • Remember to answer your phone once you begin distributing your resume.  Ensure your voicemail is appropriate and check daily for new messages.
  • If possible, attach a cover letter specific to each job/industry stating why you believe you’d be good for that company.  Depending on the situation, researching the company and showing you understand their values may give you an additional advantage.
  • Have a preliminary search for jobs and see what ones you would like to apply for before you begin the CV form.  Consider what skills those employers are looking for (often they say in the job advertisement) and whether you have any similar experience.
  • Always spend some time researching a company before an interview.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself.  Job hunting isn’t fun and can be stressful but being positive will go a long way!
